THQ Know How To Do PR

August 21, 2008

How do we know this? Not content with pimping out upcoming Dawn of War 2 through the use of excellent CGI trailers and the confirmation of inclusion of Tyranids as a playable race in the game, they’ve only gone and done something that can only be called above and beyond when it comes to the call of PR duty.

They’re building a life size, working Rhino transport.

Built from the shell of a British FV432 armoured transport, the finished vehicle is set to debut at the Games Workshop Games Day in Birmingham this September 14th. While it won’t be carrying a squad of Space Marines, the company is outfitting the interior with high-end PC’s to demo the game to any who dare step inside.

Tim Curry, star of Red Alert 3 (Update 2, Full Cast List)

August 20, 2008

It’s the truth, if news coming out of the Leipzig Games Convention is to be believed. Kotaku reports that casting details for the new game were revealed at an EA press conference:

The leaders of the three factions — Allies, Empire of the Rising Sun and the Soviet Union — will be played by JK Simmons, George Takei and Tim Curry, respectively.

Which, to be frank, is all kinds of awesome. The cutscenes of the Command & Conquer series have always been a cheesy, B-movie-style highlight of the games, and casting an experienced scenery-chewer like Curry makes perfect sense. Oh, and EA are upping the hot chick quotient too, with the new inclusion of Jenny McCarthy as Tanya.

What’s more, Kotaku hints that Peter Stormare will at least be appearing in a cinematic trailer for the game. Peter-bloody-Stormare!

UPDATE: CVG have got even more details and a full cast list, bless ’em. Here it is:

  • Gemma Atkinson (Hollyoaks)
  • Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Hunt for Red October)
  • Andrew Divoff (LOST)
  • Kelly Hu (X2, The Scorpion King)
  • Jenny McCarthy (Scream 3, former Playboy Playmate of the Year)
  • Ivana Milicevic (Casino Royale)
  • Jonathan Pryce (Pirates of the Caribbean)
  • J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man, Juno)
  • Autumn Reeser (The OC)
  • Peter Stormare (Prison Break, Armageddon)
  • George Takei (Star Trek, Heroes)
  • Randy “The Natural” Couture (former UFC Heavyweight champion)
  • Gina “Conviction” Carano (Undefeated Elite XC fighter, American Gladiators)

UPDATE 2: The hi-def trailer is now online here.

“You call that breaking my spine!?”

August 20, 2008

The Heavy Update for Team Fortress 2 has dropped (on time, for a change). For a free tweak to an existing game it’s a monster, and here’s the round-up of what’s included.

First, the Heavy unlockables – we have Natascha, a new version of the minigun that does 25% less damage but will slow enemies down for an instant when it hits. The Killing Gloves of Boxing are the new melee option. Killing an enemy with these gives the Heavy a five second crit-boost to use with any weapon. That’s five seconds of guaranteed critical hits, and it can be extended if the Heavy keeps on killing with them. It’s not much, but I can see it making all the difference in melee combat.

And then, last night, we were told about the Sandvich.

The Duke on XBLA

August 20, 2008

Yes, that’s right, the original Duke Nukem 3D (from waaaay back in 1996) is coming to Xbox Live Arcade “soon”. To quote the announcement from 3D Realms:

…we can confirm that the game has indeed passed final certification with Microsoft on Friday the 15th of August (on our first try, no less). That means the game is done – it is now in the hands of Microsoft. At this time we cannot give you details on release date or points cost, as we do not have that information. There’s plenty of really cool stuff in this new update to a classic title.

Heavy TF2 Update Next Week

August 13, 2008

For, among other things, the Heavy. Over on the Team Fortress 2 blog Valve have started teasing details of what’s coming down the pipe next week. Expect a new revelation every day over here until next Tuesday, with the update going live soon after that.

What’s in store? Valve’s Robin Walker writes:

1Fort Comic? Livingston says “No”

August 11, 2008

It’s true. You may remember our debut feature here on The Irish Gamers was an interview with Chris Livingston of Concerned fame. He’s been operating out of 1Fort this past while, hinting at a potential Team Fortress 2 comic he had in the works. Sadly, it seems that it’ll never see the light of day.

Chris has just dropped the bombshell over here. It’s a damn shame. As anyone who’s read Concerned will know, Chris has got a great sense of how to write funny, often downright hilarious, material. While you can’t fault him for not wanting to started something he didn’t feel he was ready to do, it’s still disappointing that we’ll never see a 1Fort comic.
